This position reports to the Section Chief of Molecular Imaging and Therapy (MIT) and to the Departmental Chair of Diagnostic Radiology (DR). The purposes of the role are to (1) provide clinical management of oncology patients receiving radiopharmaceutical therapies in MIT as outpatients (2) assure a coordinated, effective, high quality, and efficient care process, (3) work with and provide guidance to MIT/Radiology nurses, (4) use an interdisciplinary team approach to the care of patients especially with oncology nurses/APPs and MIT technologists, (5) work collaboratively with clinic management on process improvement projects, and (6) provide education to colleagues, staff and students as required.
The duties of this position include:
Clinical Responsibilities:
Provide medical and advanced practice management independently and/or in conjunction with attending physicians to oncology patients receiving radiopharmaceutical therapies in the outpatient setting.
Specifically, provide medical coverage for the outpatient MIT Clinic in Sam Jackson Hall (SJH).
Respond to and manage adverse infusion reactions and other emergencies
Review patient labs and physical conditions in order to override treatment parameters as appropriate.
Assess patient condition when notified of an urgent need, and order necessary medications, imaging studies or other supportive care interventions.
Review urgent EKG’s, imaging, laboratory studies and other ancillary tests prior to start of treatment as needed.
Review investigational study EKG’s, imaging, labs and other ancillary tests prior to start of treatment.
Provide patient education.
Provide consultation to nurses.
Consult with pharmacists on treatment changes and PRN medications.
Ensure there is appropriate coverage at all times, by working collaboratively with colleagues and covering for colleagues as needed when peers are on leave.
Collaborate with attending physicians regarding a patient's condition, treatment plans, and urgent medical needs.
Review labs and imaging as appropriate.
Provide comprehensive symptom management of complex patients by working collaboratively with oncology nurses, palliative care providers, social workers and others based on patient need.
Participate in clinical trials. Deliver care to patients receiving treatment on clinical trials per protocol guidelines with timely notification of principal investigator and study coordinator and appropriate documentation of adverse events.
Work in conjunction with community oncologists to provide post-therapy care.
Make appropriate referrals to specialty care service within OHSU and outside of OHSU.
Consult with specialty care providers when appropriate.
Maintain communication with primary care providers and other individuals and agencies (e.g. skilled nursing facilities) as appropriate.
Provide coverage for timely completion of prescription refills.
Communicate with patients and family regarding their medical conditions, treatment plans, radiation safety precautions, and their progress.
Identify patient needs early and communicate plan to patients, families, nurse case manager, and other healthcare team members.
Work with nurses, technologists, social workers, nutrition services, pharmacy, medical assistants and others as needed to assure optimal patient care.
Assure appropriate setting of care (ambulatory versus inpatient).
Prescribe and supervise same-day anxiolytics for patient scans.
Document subjective and objective findings, assessment and plan clearly and accurately in clinical notes according to OHSU guidelines.
Adhere to best practice protocols and OHSU specific policies.
Obtain training and education on safe prescribing of radiopharmaceutical therapies, including radiation safety precautions, and medical staff credentialing approval for signing supportive plans and order sets.
Supervision of procedure-related recovery.
Education:
Patient and family education.
Resident, medical, APRN and/or PA student teaching.
Collaborate with MIT team members to establish or revise clinical pathways and patient education materials.
Coordinate onboarding and training of newly hired Advanced Practice Providers (APP).
Work with clinic and hospital staff to optimize order sets, patient instructions, and other infrastructure that supports patient care.
Attend and participate in Grand Rounds, OHSU conferences, tumor boards, fellow lectures, national conferences and other learning opportunities as available.
Advocate for APP needs within the MIT section and DR Department.
Quality and Research:
Identify and engage in opportunities to improve the quality and efficiency of care provided to MIT patients.
Promote use of appropriate research findings in practice to exceed the standards of care.
Work with physician leadership, nurse managers, nursing staff and social workers to prevent and/or respond to patient complaints.
Effectively manage clinic resources.
Participate as sub-investigator in clinical research studies.
Leadership and Administration (if APP will be Lead or Manager):
Participate in the onboarding plan and oversight of new Advanced Practice Providers.
Maximize communication of APPs in inpatient and outpatient settings through regular meetings and communication.
Participate in recruitment and hiring of new APPs.
Work with the APPs to facilitate understanding and consensus regarding proposed changes in departmental and OHSU policies, procedures, practices, and APP roles within the practice.
Work with clinic staff and division management process improvement efforts towards meeting institutional targets of high quality, cost-efficient patient management.
Assist HR with recruitment efforts.

Position Conditions/Qualifications:
Nurse Practitioner: Valid State of Oregon Registered Nurse license, current Nurse Practitioner license for the state of Oregon, State of Oregon Nurse Practitioner Prescriptive Privileges, Recommend membership in professional nursing organization. Recommended oncology certification – required within one year after hire.
Physician Assistant: Valid State of Oregon Physician Assistant license, current Physician Assistant license for State of Oregon, State of Oregon Licensure under CHH MD, Recommend membership in professional organization.
Training requirement set out by medication safety committee for signing chemotherapy orders to be completed within one year after hire.
Fluoroscopy training and Medical Imaging Board approval (within one year of hire)
ACLS/BLS certification required.
Applicants must have a minimum of two years’ experience preferably in oncology, BMT or critical care.
