Division Chief: Vascular Interventional Radiology

The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, ranked the Number 1 Best Hospital in Texas, is seeking applicants for the Division Chief of Vascular & Interventional Radiology. This individual is expected to make a significant impact in the field of Vascular & Interventional Radiology by leading the team and contributing to a collegial environment that will promote the academic and clinical growth of the Vascular Interventional Radiology division. The candidate must have a Doctor of Medicine (MD) or equivalent, have completed an ACGME-accredited fellowship in Vascular & Interventional Radiology or ACGME-accredited Interventional Radiology/Diagnostic Radiology residency, be American Board of Radiology-certified or eligible in Interventional Radiology and Diagnostic Radiology. Eligibility for a full Texas medical license and its acquisition prior to start of employment is required. 

The candidate is expected to provide high-quality clinical services; initiate research projects; actively engage in teaching of residents and fellows; participate in quality improvement and value initiatives; and assist division members to excel in their academic missions. The candidate should have substantial experience in all aspects of Vascular Interventional Radiology clinical practice, including novel therapies and procedures. This individual should possess strong academic interests, evidence of research productivity, and the ability to develop premier translational research programs or clinical trials. Experience in faculty development and mentorship is also expected.

The Vascular Interventional Radiology Division, which includes 16 faculty members and 16 Advanced Practice Providers, performs more than 10,000 procedures per year at our primary sites: Parkland Hospital, the Level 1 Trauma Center for Dallas County, and busiest Emergency Department in the US, and Clements University Hospital, the flagship tertiary academic Hospital for UT Southwestern Medical Center. The VIR division also provides image guided biopsy services, and diagnostic noninvasive vascular imaging interpretations for vascular ultrasound and CT angiography. The faculty are also involved in multidisciplinary care through the Simmons Comprehensive Cancer Center. There is also a renowned Pulmonary Hypertension Clinic, and divisional faculty are integral to Pulmonary Embolism Response Teams (PERT) at both hospitals, providing advanced endovascular therapies for both acute and chronic thromboembolic disease.

Clements University Hospital is also a designated Hereditary Hemorrhagic Telangiectasia Center, and faculty are actively involved in the treatment of pulmonary arteriovenous malformations, and work in close collaboration with vascular surgery and cardiothoracic surgery for management of other vascular conditions.

The educational aspect of the mission is also critical for the VIR Division Chief. The division hosts both the Independent and Integrated Interventional Radiology ACGME-accredited residency programs, and expansion of the integrated residency program complement from 3 to 5 is underway. All diagnostic radiology (DR) resident trainees also rotate through the Division.

Both hospital systems offer the highest caliber of imaging technology including Philips Angiography Systems capable of cone-beam CT, a Siemens Hybrid CT-Angio suite, and dedicated CT and US procedure rooms. Multiple thermal ablation systems are available including RFA, microwave (Neuwave), cryoablation, and irreversible electroporation, in addition to radioembolization (Y90). The division coordinates care though its dedicated full-service outpatient radiology clinic supported by a manager, nurses, and medical assistants.

The UT Southwestern Department of Radiology offers a dynamic academic environment and is a source of collaboration on both clinical and research endeavors. Faculty members have dedicated academic time and many opportunities to develop research interests with our strong basic science group and other clinical and basic science departments across the campus. The Department houses dedicated research MR, PET-CT, and PET-MR scanners, a vibrant cyclotron and radiochemistry program, and active MR-guided HIFU for both neurological and prostate applications. A plan to develop interventional MRI programs for other applications is in development. These instruments are supplemented by a computer lab, on-site iterative reconstruction scientists, tissue culture labs and 3,000 sq. ft. of wet lab space. All this is further augmented by a separate facility on campus, the Advanced Imaging Research Center, which houses a Philips 7T MRI scanner, three 3T MRI clinical scanners, two 3T MRI research human research scanners, a unique hyper-polarization program, research PET/CT, research PET/MR, and a full complement of pre-clinical imaging equipment. Administrative, biostatistical and logistical support are provided.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Duties include the following:

Supervision

1. Leads and supervises 16 vascular and interventional radiology faculty to deliver patient-centric care with superior outcomes. Supervisory activities include recruiting, hiring, scheduling, training, performance evaluation, promotion, counseling, disciplining, and discharging in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable legal guidelines.
2. Works collaboratively alongside the Vice Chair for Image-Guided Procedures and the group of 16 APP.
3. Promotes a positive working relationship with and among divisional faculty to ensure they perform their responsibilities in a way that fosters superior service to UT Southwestern patients and referring faculty in other divisions.
4. Coordinates logistics between divisions where there may be shared procedural overlap.

Administration

1. Works collaboratively with referring clinicians, technical and administrative staff to ensure the delivery of quality services and to ensure that all applicable regulatory, safety and legal requirements are met
2. Ensures the availability of adequate personnel for expanding clinical practice
3. Communicates with Department Administrators and the Vice Chair for Image-Guided Procedures on a regular basis concerning operational (staffing, equipment), safety, regulatory and other issues with the potential of having adverse effects on operations
4. Complies with HIPAA regulations as they apply to the job; protects patient confidentiality
5. Creates and maintains standard operating procedures for the division
6. Creates job descriptions for other leadership roles in the division including medical directors
7. Responsible for onboarding of new faculty
8. Perform FPPE and OPPE for faculty when needed.

Clinical

1. Promotes appropriate use of diagnostic exams and vascular and interventional radiology procedures
2. Ensures a culture of service in the division, ensuring all faculty are accountable to the same standards of procedural excellence, collaboration, timeliness, and appropriate resource utilization.
3. Develops high quality noninvasive vascular imaging exam protocols and ensures accurate, detailed, and timely interpretations.
4. Interacts collaboratively with nurses, technologists, colleagues, clinicians, and patients using meetings, interdisciplinary conferences, and social media as tools to promote the division.
5. Performs oversight of physician scheduling through  QGenda

Education/Teaching

1. Teaches Vascular & Interventional Radiology residents, Diagnostic Radiology residents and UT Southwestern medical students, and orients residents during clinical rotations
2. Participates in scholarly activities including research, enhances the brand of UTSW through presentations at national meetings, and impactful publications
3. Supports and collaborates with the program director of the ACGME-accredited Independent and Integrated Interventional Radiology residency programs

Education/Experience:

• Full-time faculty member in the Department of Radiology
• Doctor of Medicine (MD) or equivalent
• Fellowship training or equivalent
• Board-certified in Radiology with an unrestricted license to practice medicine in Texas
• Sub-specialty certification in Vascular & Interventional Radiology
• Extensive clinical experience and established leadership skills
• Demonstrated ability to lead teams creatively and synergistically
• Demonstrated ability to work with diverse populations
• Demonstrated ethical conduct, professionalism, interpersonal skills, organizational skills, and management abilities to effectively direct and develop academic physicians and support staff
