University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics currently offers a one-year non-accredited fellowship in Body Imaging with opportunities for participation in research and teaching and a broad range of clinical activities. Fellows rotate on Body CT, Photon Counting CT, Ultrasound, GI/GU Fluoroscopy and Body MRI. The latter will include three to four months of primary responsibility in Body MRI/MRA but could also include experience in musculoskeletal, cardiac, chest, and neuro. Up to an additional two months of elective time will be flexible and chosen by the candidate if staffing allows.
The content and structure of the Fellowship aims to optimize skill and knowledge in body imaging which will lead to capability of providing a higher quality of care for patients. The flexibility within the program allows Fellows to tailor the experience according to the needs of the position and environment they intend to practice in after the Fellowship year.
Previous graduates have gone on to a variety of settings including:
- Academic centers (including being recruited as Staff at the University of Iowa)
- Private practice
- Continued with other radiology fellowship training at the University of Iowa as part of the IMG Alternate Pathway toward ABR eligibility

Body Imaging is an active service with ten staff members whose primary interest is adult body imaging, performing GI and GU fluoroscopy and contrast studies, CT, CTA, CT colonography, ultrasound, MRI and MRA, and body interventional procedures.
Our advanced equipment uses two Siemens 16-Slice Sensations CT scanners (one devoted entirely to research), a Siemens 64-slice scanner, three Toshiba Aquilions, four 1.5 Tesla MRI scanners (including a GECVII MRI scanner), a Siemens 3T MR, seven Siemens ultrasound machines, two new, state-of-the-art Siemens GI fluoroscopy suites, and two recently-installed angiographic suites.
The fellowship includes hands-on experience with all GI, GU, and ultrasound procedures, as well as full participation in daily conferences, monthly journal clubs, multi-disciplinary tumor boards, and imaging rounds. Opportunities also exist for research and experience in specialized procedures, such as CT colonography, and intraoperative ultrasound. Fellows interested in research opportunities will appreciate the new Radiology Core Lab, which provides multi-disciplinary tools designed to lead innovative research.
