The Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology (MIR) at Washington University School of Medicine (WUSM) in St Louis seeks an outstanding Ph.D., D.Sc. and/or M.D. imaging scientist to lead the Computational Imaging Research Center (CIRC). It currently ranks #2 among Radiology Departments for NIH funding. The CIRC is one of five research centers within the Division of Radiological Sciences. In addition to the CIRC, faculty and trainees have access to world-class research support facilities including the Center for High Performance Computing, Center for Clinical Imaging Research, Cyclotron Facility & Nuclear Pharmacy, MRI Facility, and Pre-Clinical PET and MRI Imaging Facilities. Pursuing highly interdisciplinary research, MIR offers unparalleled opportunities for collaborative research within the department and across Washington University, including the Institute for Informatics and the McKelvey School of Engineering.
Created as an innovative imaging technology initiative between the Schools of Medicine and Engineering, the CIRC has evolved over more than three decades to encompass a broad computational, informatics and artificial intelligence R&D program. It is composed of eight faculty members and ~20 trainees and staff. The scope of the CIRC includes, but is not limited to the use of AI methods to enable computational phenotyping (e.g., diagnosis, prognosis and clinical decision support), image analysis and feature extraction, advanced image reconstruction, and multi-scale data integration and modeling. Center faculty collaborate with researchers on campus and around the globe to study wide variety of diseases.
Building on an outstanding foundation and reporting to the Senior Vice-Chair and Director of the Division of Radiological Sciences, the Director of the Center is charged with developing and implementing an innovative and robust strategic vision for the Center’s future. Most biological problems of interest require informatics, computational and artificial intelligence approaches spanning all levels of biophysical reality. The Director will leverage the strengths of the CIRC with other research groups at WUSM operating at different scales (e.g., single cell multi-omics, pre-clinical and human imaging and electronic medical records) in order to catalyze the development of integrative methods to better develop a “systems medicine approach” for the study and precise treatment of human disease. To accomplish these goals it is expected that the Director will build collaborations with a wide, multi-disciplinary range of internal and external researchers and expand the Center through recruiting diverse and talented faculty and postdocs to advance the breadth of its research portfolio.
The Director will have a strong track record of publications, external funding through grants and contracts and will develop and maintain a multi-disciplinary, rigorous and extramurally funded research program interfacing with the MIR’s research centers, translational imaging facilities, and the other areas within Washington University. Added attention will be given to candidates whose strength lies in image analysis, reconstruction, and feature extraction, as well as multi-scale data modeling, AI (including ML/DL), and a strong translational research focus. The Director will have demonstrated ability to promote a spirit of inquiry and scholarship, and provide faculty with mentorship for scholarly activities and research. Qualified candidates will be at the level of Associate or Full Professor rank.
