The University of Michigan Radiology is looking to fill a post-doctoral researcher position in Translational Aortic Imaging Research. We are looking for enthusiastic candidates with a strong background in Medical Image Analysis who are interested in applying their technical skills to advance the development and clinical translation of novel techniques for assessment of patients with disease of the thoracic aorta. We seek applicants who are curious and self-motivated, who can take on independent project leadership tasks and have a desire to improve the care of patients through advanced medical imaging.
The project, directed by Dr. Nicholas Burris, is focused on the development of a novel medical image analysis technique, Vascular Deformation Mapping (VDM), which allows for three-dimensional assessment of growth in thoracic aortic aneurysm and dissection. This project is focused on the development and commercialization of VDM and is supported by an NIH Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant in collaboration with a medical image analysis software company (Imbio, LLC). Our multi-disciplinary group involves close collaboration between investigators in the Departments of Radiology (Dr. Nicholas Burris), Biomedical Engineering (Dr. C. Alberto Figueroa), and Cardiac Surgery (Dr. Himanshu Patel). The post-doctoral researcher will be involved in the technical development, refinement and validation of VDM, and the application of VDM to analyze a large population of patients with thoracic aortic disease at University of Michigan.
The successful applicant must have a Ph.D. in the fields of in Computer Science, Mechanical/Biomedical Engineering, Medical Physics, or equivalent field. This project involves advanced analysis of medical imaging data (CT and MRI) and thus skills in medical image analysis, machine learning, and deformable image registration are necessary, and some familiarity with image-based computational modeling is preferred. Proficiency in Python and MATLAB is required. The position is available to start as early as July 1, 2020, and will stay open until filled.

The team has access to state-of-the-art computational facilities for medical imaging analysis including advanced segmentation/CAD software (Mimics & 3-matic) and high-performance cluster computing infrastructure. The successful candidate will: conduct collaborative research, author and co-author peer-reviewed publications and present findings at professional meetings, and assist in supervision and training of undergraduate and graduate students.
