The Stephens Family Clinical Research Institute at Carle Foundation Hospital is looking to hire the inaugural Director for its newly-formed High Field MRI Center.
The Director will be appointed at the Full Professor Level in the Carle/University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) College of Medicine and will be responsible for hiring new faculty and researchers within the Center, for which extensive funds are available. The Director should be recognized internationally as a leader in their field whose accomplishments have made a major impact in clinical research. The new Director will have a proven track record of attracting and supervising graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. The Director will report directly to the Carle Vice President of Research.
The focus of the new Center will be on clinical applications of high field MRI, and will concentrate on areas closely aligned to one of Carle Foundation’s major research pillars, which are: neuroscience, oncology, heart and vascular diseases, and digestive health. There is also strong interest in the area of rural health. A Siemens 7 Tesla Terra system will be installed in Fall 2020, which will be fully available for clinical use and clinical research. In addition the new MRI Center will comprise several new Siemens 3 Tesla and 1.5 Tesla systems to be installed in 2021, with significant time available for research. There are also extensive facilities available at our close collaborator the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology’s Biomedical Imaging Center (situated one block from Carle) which has two Siemens 3T Prisma systems and supports a wide range of collaborative research in magnetic resonance imaging technology and applications across the UIUC campus. Interaction with existing MRI groups at the Beckman Institute is encouraged. There are opportunities for appointments in relevant engineering or basic science departments at the University
In addition to the 7T system, Siemens is providing an on-site clinical scientist for three years. Funds are also available for an MR Staff Scientist, dedicated high field MR technicians, and a high field clinical neuroradiologist.
Previous experience and requirements:
Applicants for the position should have experience in running a multi-faculty research group and a demonstrated publication and external funding record related to MRI clinical methodology development. The Director is expected to establish an independent externally-funded research program, and to participate where appropriate in the teaching and mentoring program of the new engineering-based medical school. Responsibilities will involve translation of basic research into improved clinical practice, as well as supervision of students and medical residents.
